Education in Ancient Rome - From the Elder Cato to the Younger Pliny (Hardcover): Stanley Bonner Education in Ancient Rome - From the Elder Cato to the Younger Pliny (Hardcover)
Stanley Bonner
R5,629 Discovery Miles 56 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines the development, structure and role of education from the third century B.C to the time of Trajan, a period which saw great changes in Roman society. When originally published it was the first complete review of the subject for half a century and was based on a new collection and analysis of ancient source material. The book is divided into three parts. The first provides historical background, showing the effects upon the educational system of Rome's transition from a predominantly agricultural community to a great metropolis; it traces the development of primary, grammar and rhetoric schools, and discusses educational standards both in early Rome and under the Empire, when advanced teaching was more widely available, but often adversely affected by weakening social values and diminished parental control. The volume goes on to describe the physical conditions of teaching - accommodation, equipment, discipline, the economic position of teachers and the fee-paying system, and the part played by the State. Finally, he gives a full appraisal of the standard teaching programme, from the elementary study of the three Rs, to the theory and practice of rhetoric, in which the needs of the future advocate were constantly borne in mind.

Remaking the Republic - Black Politics and the Creation of American Citizenship (Paperback): Christopher James Bonner Remaking the Republic - Black Politics and the Creation of American Citizenship (Paperback)
Christopher James Bonner
R647 Discovery Miles 6 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Citizenship in the nineteenth-century United States was an ever-moving target. The Constitution did not specify its exact meaning, leaving lawmakers and other Americans to struggle over the fundamental questions of who could be a citizen, how a person attained the status, and the particular privileges citizenship afforded. Indeed, as late as 1862, U.S. Attorney General Edward Bates observed that citizenship was "now as little understood in its details and elements, and the question as open to argument and speculative criticism as it was at the founding of the Government." Black people suffered under this ambiguity, but also seized on it in efforts to transform their nominal freedom. By claiming that they were citizens in their demands for specific rights, they were, Christopher James Bonner argues, at the center of creating the very meaning of American citizenship. In the decades before and after Bates's lament, free African Americans used newspapers, public gatherings, and conventions to make arguments about who could be a citizen, the protections citizenship entailed, and the obligations it imposed. They thus played a vital role in the long, fraught process of determining who belonged in the nation and the terms of that belonging. Remaking the Republic chronicles the various ways African Americans from a wide range of social positions throughout the North attempted to give meaning to American citizenship over the course of the nineteenth century. Examining newpsapers, state and national conventions, public protest meetings, legal cases, and fugitive slave rescues, Bonner uncovers a spirited debate about rights and belonging among African Americans, the stakes of which could determine their place in U.S. society and shape the terms of citizenship for all Americans.

R545 Discovery Miles 5 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An engaging and practical romp through contemporary financial and economic history—and what it means for your financial future Economic booms and busts are happening with more frequency. Since the turn of the new millennium, fortunes have been made and lost at a blistering pace. Each boom is like the tension building up before an earthquake. Seismologists can detect the build-up, but they can't necessarily explain why—or when—the next quake will hit. Economic busts can be equally devastating…and followed by numerous aftershocks. In this entertaining romp through recent economic and financial history, best-selling author, Addison Wiggin, traces the primary trends that have led up to rapid economic growth and innovation while keeping an eye on the inevitable downturn. The author practices "literary economics," telling stories about the characters behind the scenes and their motives, making this wide-ranging book easy-to-read. The current edition has been revised, adapted, and re-imagined, enlightening readers about what's happening behind today's top headlines: The rise of new financial innovations over the past decade, including cryptocurrencies, mobile trading platforms, and the democratization of financial markets How the policies of the Federal Reserve following the Panic of '08 led an entire generation to become unwitting speculators in stocks, bonds, real estate, and rare commodities What impact new political trends—environmental, social, governance (ESG) and diversity equity and inclusion (DEI)—have had on managing your own money Ultimately, the book helps place current events in the context of identifiable historical trends. The book proposes that when you understand what the primary trends are and follow them to their logical conclusion, it makes planning for your financial future much easier. What will be the role of the US economy in the future as policy makers try to grapple with new competition, economic and political, from Brazil, Russia, India, China - the so-called BRICs? The author follows the facts, the trends, and the stories that make up history and parlays them into forecasts for what he sees coming next. Ultimately, you'll get a review of previous trades and a new Trade of the Decade. Enjoy.

Cold War Negritude - Form and Alignment in French Caribbean Literature: Christopher T. Bonner Cold War Negritude - Form and Alignment in French Caribbean Literature
Christopher T. Bonner
R3,343 Discovery Miles 33 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cold War Negritude is the first book-length study of francophone Caribbean literature to foreground the political context of the global Cold War. It focuses on three canonical francophone Caribbean writers—René Depestre, Aimé Césaire, and Jacques-Stephen Alexis—whose literary careers and political alignments spanned all three “worlds” of the 1950s Cold War order. As black Caribbean authors who wrote in French, who participated directly in the global communist movement, and whose engagements with Marxist thought and practice were mediated by their colonial relationship to France, these writers expressed unique insight into this bipolar system as it was taking shape. The book shows how, over the course of the 1950s, French Caribbean Marxist authors re-evaluated the literary aesthetics of Negritude and sought to develop alternatives that would be adequate to the radically changed world system of the Cold War. Through close readings of literary, theoretical, and political texts by Depestre, Césaire, and Alexis, I show that this formal shift reflected a strikingly changed understanding of what it meant to write engaged literature in the new, bipolar world order. Debates about literary aesthetics became the proxy battlefield on which Antillean writers promoted and fought for their different visions of an emancipated Caribbean modernity. Consequent to their complicated Cold War alignments, these Antillean authors developed original and unorthodox Marxist literary aesthetics that syncretized an array of socialist literary tendencies from around the globe.

Un-Civilizing America - How Win-Win Deals Make Us Better (Hardcover): William Bonner Un-Civilizing America - How Win-Win Deals Make Us Better (Hardcover)
William Bonner
R561 Discovery Miles 5 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Discover what sets a fair and just economy apart from the rest In Un-Civilizing America – How Win-Win Deals Made Us Rich, bestselling author William Bonner delivers an incisive and engrossing account of the American economy, the four simple steps to earning money the honest way, and why many choose the dishonest way instead. He also discusses the shadow groups that influence America behind the scenes and how their power grew so large they lost the need to remain hidden, and what really drives the government’s phony wars—including the War on Drugs and the US-China trade war. In the book, you’ll learn why the best kinds of economies run on “win-win” deals and how companies and individuals use market-set prices to maximize their utility. You’ll also discover: Why the “Sermon on the Mount” was the best economic and social advice ever given How civilization developed and the one thing that sets it apart from barbarity How “win-lose” deals inevitably force one side or the other to accept the terms of the “agreement” Why allowing only one side to profit in an arrangement is a recipe for disaster in the long run Why capitalism favors “win-win” deals while socialism prefers the “win-lose” variety A can’t-miss resource for anyone interested in American or global economics and finance, Un-Civilizing America will also earn a place on the bookshelves of business leaders, entrepreneurs, policy and lawmakers, and regulators.

A Guide to the Dirty South Atlanta (Paperback): Jennifer Bonner A Guide to the Dirty South Atlanta (Paperback)
Jennifer Bonner; Edited by Benjamin Flowers
R671 Discovery Miles 6 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drawing on the format of the urban guidebook, A Guide to the Dirty South--Atlanta generates a new discourse about the architecture of the American South. By guiding readers on a tour of Atlanta, this project seeks to reclaim a regional identity for cities otherwise deemed to be a "backwoods" by the East and West Coasts. Borrowing from the hip hop industry and recognising the rivalry between the two coasts, A Guide to the Dirty South--Atlanta redirects our attention to a 'third coast'. Steeped in geography, historical events, typology, storytelling, and popular culture, trajectories through the city that the guide takes are idiosyncratic but urge the discipline of architecture toward a long overdue reading of Dirty South regionalism. Part tour guide, part architectural manual, the publication also features oral histories in a set of interviews with prominent architects, theorists, chefs, community leaders, and hip hop artists, from Architectural Historian Mario Carpo to hip-hop group Goodie Mob.Authored by Jennifer Bonner, the TVSDesign Distinguised Studio Critic at Georgia Tech, A Guide to the Dirty South--Atlanta takes the reader on a tour of "Rap City", "Pop up Surface Lots", "Architecture of Quarantine" and a "Geography of Smells". Wittily designed, and featuring beautiful illustrations throughout, A Guide to the Dirty South--Atlanta is perfect for those new to the architectural delights of Atlanta, and long-time fans alike.

Personality Presenters - Television's Intermediaries with Viewers (Paperback): Frances Bonner Personality Presenters - Television's Intermediaries with Viewers (Paperback)
Frances Bonner
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Television presenters are key to the sociability of the medium, speaking directly to viewers as intermediaries between audiences and those who are interviewed, perform or compete on screen. As targets of both great affection and derision from viewers and the subjects of radio, internet, magazine and newspaper coverage, many have careers that have lasted almost as long as post-war television itself. Nevertheless, as a profession, television presenting has received little scholarly attention. Personality Presenters explores the role of the television presenter, analysing the distinct skills possessed by different categories of host and the expectations and difficulties that exist with regard to the promotion of the various films, books, consumer and cultural products with which they are associated. The close involvement of presenters with the content that they present is examined, while the impact of the presenters' own celebrity on the tasks that they perform is scrutinised. With a focus on non-fiction entertainment shows such as game shows, lifestyle and reality shows, chat, daytime and talk shows, this book explores issues of consumer culture, advertising and celebrity, as well as the connection of presenters with ethical issues. Offering detailed case studies of internationally recognised presenters, as well comparisons between national presenters from the UK and Australia, Personality Presenters provides a rich discussion of television presenters as significant conduits in the movement of ideas. As such, it will appeal to sociologists as well as those working in the fields of popular culture, cultural and media studies and cultural theory.
